How about making an appetizer platter with puff pastry, Vienna sausages and olives that will impress your guests?
This appetizer tray is composed of 3 different preparations, namely 2 flowers, 2 ears of wheat and 4 petals. You will be able to realize all this with a single puff pastry.
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Baking Time: 20 minutes at 400°F (200°C)
Difficulty: easy
Yield: 2-3 servings
Ingredients
- 1 rectangular puff pastry
- 3 Vienna sausages
- 4 black olives
- 4 green olives
- 1 egg yolk
Instructions
For the flowers
- Cut 3 strips of puff pastry lengthwise and then each strip in 2 as shown below. Set aside the remaining puff pastry for the other preparations.
- Cut 1 Vienna sausage into 8 slices.
- Form rings with each strip of dough and place 2 black olives in 2 rings, 2 green olives in 2 rings and 2 sausage rings in the remaining 2 rings as shown below (reserve the remaining sausage rings for other preparations).
- Assemble the rings 3 by 3 and pinch them in the center with chopsticks to form flowers. Press the center well.
Place the 2 flowers on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
For wheat ears
- Cut remaining puff pastry in half lengthwise, then cut one half in half again to make 2 squares. Set aside the remaining puff pastry for the 3rd preparation.
- Place 2 sausages on top of each square, then roll up the dough.
- Using a pair of scissors, cut beveled slices from each sausage without going all the way to the end, to make an ear of wheat shape.
- Gently spread the slices backwards, alternating left and right, and place both ears on the baking sheet.
For the petals
- Use the last rectangular strip of puff pastry. Make 12 notches at regular intervals, face to face, on each side of the pastry strip, as shown below. Press each cut with a fork.
- Pinch each end into a point.
- Cut this strip of dough in half to make 6 slits. Place 2 slices of reserved sausage in the middle of one end of each strip and roll them up.
- Cut into the center of the resulting sausage, between the 2 slices. Place each part on the baking sheet, then gently open the slices, alternating them to form petals.
Preheat oven to 400 °F (200 °C). Brown all the preparations with egg yolk. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 °F (200 °C).
Serve your floral appetizer tray with extra olives and impress your guests!
